VATA: “THE KING OF THE DOSHAS” and ruler of autumn season
Vata, one of the three bioenergetic forces within the human physiology and governing principle in Nature responsible for communication, circulation, maintenance, movement and transportation.
Depending on where you are, the days are getting colder and windier, increasing the qualities of Vata, "The King of the Doshas," in our external environment. As our physiologies are interconnected with nature, Vata is also predominating and increasing in our bodies as it governs the biological, emotional, psychological, and physio-pathological functions of our body, mind, and consciousness.
When balanced, Vata dosha expresses as flowing creativity and mental alertness, feeling enthusiastic; digestion is normal with no uncomfortable or embarrassing post-digestive effects; bodily tissues are properly formed, and one has a strong immunity; it is easy to fall asleep, and sleep is uninterrupted.
If not addressed and imbalanced, excess Vata can manifest as disorders and imbalances such as dry hair, dry and rough skin; anxiety, fears; tension headaches; poor sleep or trouble falling asleep; ear disorders like tinnitus; digestive complaints like bloating, more gas, gurgling sounds from the gut and irregularity; being underweight and trouble gaining weight; joint issues, degenerative arthritis, etc. It is also a time when we are more susceptible to picking up colds, coughs, and flus going around if our immunity is compromised.
"Inside each of us, there's a continual Autumn" - Rumi
As Autumn season is ruled by Vata dosha, it can be beautiful time of year for introspection, letting go, and also engaging all the senses: the earthy scent of pine trees and damp forest floor; feeling cosy, soft cashmere sweaters hugging our skin; sitting by a fireplace and watching the flames flicker; listening to the dried brown, firey orange and golden yellow leaves crunch underfoot. It is balancing to eat scrumptious baked pumpkins and squashes; sip calming, aromatic nervine teas like Tulsi or milk spiced with cinnamon and turmeric; and savour flavourful, warming spices in our cooking.
